Cantley ace Hewett into Turin final after beating world No. 7 and top seed

Cantley wheelchair tennis star Alfie Hewett claimed his latest victory over a world top 10 ranked senior opponent today to reach the men’s singles final at the Trofeo della Mole ITF 2 Series tournament in Turin, Italy.

British No. 4 Hewett, 17, who defeated British No. 3 David Phillipson in his quarter-final, beat former ITF World Champion, current world No. 7 and tournament top seed Maikel Scheffers of the Netherlands 6-4, 6-2 in his semi-final in Turin.

“I'm very pleased with the result today; I've been struggling recently with my singles game and not getting the performances and results I was wanting, so it was a good feeling to finally get a good performance and cause a shock result,” said Hewett, who has won two major doubles titles in the last three weeks.

He partnered fellow Brit Gordon Reid to victory for his first Super Series title at the British Open before then joining forces with Scheffers to win the men’s doubles at last week’s ITF 1 Series Belgian Open.

”I played one of my best matches and stayed aggressive and positive throughout today. I’m really looking forward to playing Miki tomorrow and will be aiming to keep up the level I played today,” added Hewett, who now plays Japan’s Takuya Miki in Saturday’s title decider, having already beaten Miki in Australia in January for his first win of the season over a world top 10 ranked player.
