Alfie Hewett has won January’s Aegon Player of the Month after cementing his place as the world’s best junior wheelchair tennis player.
Hewett became world boys’ number one at the start of the month at just 15 years old following a successful 2012 on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.
He travelled to the Cruyff Foundation Junior Masters in Tarbes at the end of January as defending singles and doubles champion with the added pressure of being newly crowned world No.1.
But the senior world No. 58 took it all in his stride and won all three of his round robin matches with the loss of just one game to reach the singles semi-finals. He went on to beat his doubles partner Chris Herman from the USA 6-3, 6-4 to book a place in the final.
And he defended his title with ease getting the better of junior world No.4 Carlos Anker from the Netherlands 6-0, 6-1.
Earlier in the weekend he had paired up with Herman to successfully defend his doubles title as the pair defeated Anker and Austria’s Nico Langmann 6-2, 7-5 in the final.
