Congratulations to Norfolk's Johnnie Carmichael-Plester who teamed up with Josh Wilson of Cambridgeshire to claim the 12 & Under doubles title at the AEGON Clay Court Championships at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire which took place from 13 to 21 June 2009.
Carmichael-Plester bowed out in the second round of the singles event to Scotland’s Ross Wilson but bounced back to reach the doubles final after an epic semi-final win over Jake Munns and Jonathan Burke. The final proved to be an easier match and the Norfolk player and his partner eased to a straight sets win over third seeded players Jonathan Gray and Gideon Fairhall from Yorkshire.
In the 12 & Under girl’s qualifying event there were mixed fortunes for Norfolk players. Maria Andrews qualified for the main draw with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chloe Binmore from Devon but Catherine Broster and Klara Moolman both lost. Andrews then continued her progress by knocking out another Devon player, Rebecca Ley in the opening round of the main draw 6-1, 6-0. Her run however was halted in the next round as she fell 6-4, 6-2 to eighth seed Gabriella Taylor from Hampshire.
Alongside the 12 & Under and 14 & Under events, a 10 & Under invitational event was held and Norfolk’s Will Davies came 6th overall after narrowly losing to Buckinghamshire’s Barnaby Smith 2-4, 4-1, 10-8.
