Congratulations to Norfolk who finished joint 3rd overall with Cambridgeshire at the 2009 Lionel Cox Trophy.
The event took place over the weekend of 2 and 3 May and saw the top U10, U11 and U12 players from the 8 East area counties battle it out at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire. With over 150 of the best players from 8 counties it was an excellent weekend of tennis.
Norfolk took a team of 18 junior players and put in a strong performance to finish third. An impressive first day saw every Norfolk team pick up at least one win, including the U12 and U11 girl’s teams who were both poised to top their respective boxes after two victories.
On Sunday morning the U11 girls team of Maria Andrews, Emma Moolman and Harriet Mundy beat Northamptonshire 3-0 to set up a first place play-off with Essex. Likewise the U12 girls team of Klara Moolman, Maddie Brooks and Lorna Magrath would face Hertfordshire for first place after whitewashing Essex.
The U12 boys team of Johnnie Carmichael-Plester, Tom Watkinson and Joe Evans and the U10 boys team of Matthew Cott, Tom Baker and Josh Self lost their play-offs and both finished in sixth place. However the U11's team of Owen Tudor, Jacob Harrison and Will Davies beat local rivals Suffolk 2-1 to secure fifth spot.
The U12 girls team lost narrowly to Hertfordshire and came a credible second while the U10 girls team of Chloe Hunter, Holly Inwards and Francesca Field took apart Buckinghamshire to finish in fifth.
There was success however for the U11 girl’s team who beat Essex 2-1 in the play-off to finish first and make a massive contribution to the team’s overall standing.
Johnnie Carmichael-Plester, Maria Andrews, Will Davies, Harriet Mundy and Maddie Brooks were a perfect four wins from four matches, which was no mean feat when competing against the county tennis powerhouses of Essex and Hertfordshire.
The Captains wished the U12 players well as they move on to compete in the older team events and commended them on the way they had represented their county in the last three years.
