Alfie Hewitts An Outstanding Young Athlete

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Alfie Hewett is a 14 year old wheelchair tennis player from Norwich. Over the last couple of months Alfie’s achievements have gone off the richter scale.

In August Alfie won his first career ITF Futures event at the Memorial Jens Vanherck in Belgium, in both the men’s and boys’ singles events. Hewett didn’t drop a set throughout the tournament and defeated 21-year-old Rutger Bakker in the men’s final 6-2, 6-1. Hewett also won the men’s doubles at that event with Dutch partner Dick Eikenaar, again without dropping a set throughout the event before defeating Moroccan Tarik Charbi and Belgian Ronald de Meersman 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

The following week he travelled to the Ath Open in Belgium where he scooped the boys' title alongside the men’s consolation crown.

Alfie started September brightly winning another ITF Futures men’s singles and doubles title at the Belgium 25 tournament in Lebbeke. He carried on his winning streak & won the singles & doubles crowns at the Cardiff Wheelchair tournament. Mid October he travelled to France to compete in the Tournoi De Montfermeil, where he achieved another double whammy victory winning the singles & doubles event. What an achievement. Last week he competed on UK soil at the Nottingham Indoor Tournament, where a strong field of wheelchair athletes from across the world competed for the title. Alfie did well & reached the quarter finals of the singles & the semis of the doubles.

In 2010, Hewett was the youngest player ever to gain a senior world ranking and has since risen to No.62 in the senior world rankings and is the boy’s World No.3.

Due to Alfie’s hard work & commitment to the sport he was invited to the Golden Legacy Awards Luncheon in London. Where he was awarded the Outstanding Young Athlete Award, which is a great honour. Seb Coe presented him with the award.
