LOUISE WILLGRASS MEMORIAL TENNIS TOURNAMENT
The seventh annual Ladies’ Doubles Charity Tennis Tournament held in memory of Louise Willgrass who died in the 2004 Tsunami, was held at East Anglia Tennis & Squash Club on Wednesday 14th September.
A blustery but sunny day greeted 50 competitors who were divided in pairs into four boxes for the preliminary round robin. The format was 20 minutes of play, not chat, which proved popular last year.
This was followed by a delicious buffet lunch, this year organised and cooked by Louise’s mother, Jane Cornwell.
At the same time, CRUSE Norwich, the local bereavement counselling charity launched their Cookery Book which includes a chapter on the Louise Willgrass Tournament Lunches provided by Didi Briggs in previous years (as reported in EDP on Thursday 15th September). These lovely cookery books can be ordered by emailing info@norwichcruse.org.uk or calling 01603 219977.
The final was a one set match pitching last year’s winners Annie Cowper-Johnson & Cheryl Buck (from Cromer TC) against Jo Watkins & Liz Cubitt (Stanmore/Blofield TC), the Cromer pair prevailing yet again.
A raffle was held at lunchtime with fantastic prizes donated by, amongst others, VANILLA, Libby Ferris Flowers & The City Farm Shop at Notcutts. EAT&SC Racket Stringer, Liam Nolan, donated all his takings for the day amounting to just under £100!
Thanks go to EAT&SC for providing the venue, referee, Derek Perry and Club Staff Pam, Rachel & Rob for their invaluable assistance.
With thanks to all the players who participated the tournament income raised a fabulous £1,400 which will go to CRUSE Norwich.
Emily Willgrass and her grandmother, Jane Cornwell presented beautiful bouquets to the winners and runners-up. Jane’s husband, Mike, took the photographs.
