The Northumberland Road to Wimbledon County Finals were played last weekend at Tennis @ Churchill.
The Road to Wimbledon competition is an event which runs across the country. The first stage is run at the clubs, where the club stages a minimum of a 5 player draw. The winner and runners up of all of the club stages are then invited to play at the County Finals. The Northubmerland County Finals took place over the 6th and 7th July this year at Tennis @ Churchill in Newcastle. 15 boys and 5 girls took part, representing clubs throughout the county.
The matches were played in a great spirit and there were some hard fought games. In the end Cormac Lunn of Cramlington Tennis Club beat Christopher Jeffery (Ponteland Tennis Club) in the final, 6-2, 6-0. Claudette Gilhespie (Ponteland Tennis Club) fought off the rest of the competition from the girls and managed to beat Laura van Rensbeke in the final, 4-0, 4-0.
Congratulations to Cormac and Claudette who will now travel down to The All England Tennis Club in August to play in the National Finals. We wish them the best of luck! Fingers crossed for Christopher and Laura who may get drawn as lucky losers and have the chance to play at the National Finals as well.
