Funding Boost For Cullercoats Tennis Club

Tuesday, January 07, 2014

Cullercoats Tennis Club is today celebrating the news that it has received a £60,000 funding boost from SITA Trust to refurbish its clubhouse.

The interior of the clubhouse, on Beverley Gardens next to St George’s Church, will be revamped to include a club room, new toilets and shower facilities and an energy-efficient heating system.

The development also includes a community space to be made available to local groups for meetings and activities.

Club chairman Jeff Thompson said: “We are delighted to receive this grant from SITA Trust to enable us to completely refurbish our clubhouse and transform it into a year-round facility.

“It will make such a difference to our members – from young families to our veterans – to have a clubhouse which matches our excellent playing facilities.

“As a community tennis club we are always keen to involve local residents and we are pleased that this grant will allow us to do that.”

Marek Gordon, CEO and Chairman of SITA Trust, added “We are delighted to have been able to support this project through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such worthy projects with more than £1.2 billion.”

SITA Trust provides funding through the Landfill Communities Fund. Funding is available for projects that enhance communities and enrich nature.

Building work on the development, which has planning permission from North Tyneside Council, is expected to begin this month.

The clubhouse is extensively used by the club’s 200-plus members and by visiting teams for matches.

The club’s three flood-lit courts were refurbished in 2012.
