Saturday Aegon Pro-Series Newcastle

Monday, May 12, 2014

Peter Torebko won his 6th pro singles title at the Aegon GB Pro-Series Newcastle on Saturday with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of 2013 winner Ashley Hewitt.

Torebko, the 7th seed, who last won a title in 2012 with back to back wins at Bath and Tipton, was looking to make it a hat-trick in Britain at The Northumberland Club.

Despite heavy overnight rain, and a wet forecast for the whole day, remarkably player’s took to the outdoor clay courts for the scheduled 12 noon start.

With a crowd of over 100, the final was preceded by a one minute silence, involving players, officials, ball crew and spectators, as a tribute to Elena Baltacha who so sadly passed away last Sunday.

With rain never far away, 26 year old Torebko, looked like a man on a mission, steam rolling his way through the opening set 6-1. With the German 3-2 up in the second set, with a break, a cloud burst sent players and spectators scurrying for shelter, and with the courts quickly under water it soon became evident the final was going to need to move indoors.

On the faster indoor service, serve became more prominent, and with both player’s holding serve relatively comfortably, the German who spent much of 2013 out injured, closed out for a 6-1, 64 victory.

Speaking to the crowd after the match the 2014 champion thanked them for their great support. He added; "The final was more like an ATP event, and it was a great atmosphere to play in. I am really happy when I come to play in Britain, and have good memories of my titles here in 2012. Once we moved indoors I knew serving well was going to be the key, and thankfully I did this".
