The Northumberland Ladies' County Tennis Team travelled to Welwyn Garden City last weekend (November 27-29) to take part in Group 2 of the Aegon Winter County Cup.
The team consisted of Grace Dixon, Alex Walker, Amy Hoburn, Deborah Armstrong, Claudette Gilhespie, Stephanie Booth, Fran Booth, Lauren Jones and Sarah Oswald.
The team played 9 matches each day, 6 singles and 3 doubles. The team had excellent wins on the first two days beating South Wales 7-2 and Buckinghamshire 7-2.
On the third day the opposition was Hertfordshire. They had convincingly won on the first two days, so Northumberland knew that it was going to be tough! After the six singles matches, Northumberland were 4-2 down which meant that they had to win all three of the doubles matches. The team played with great skill and determination but, despite winning the first doubles match, they had to accept defeat.
The team manager, Margaret Baron said "44 counties take part in Aegon County Cup events and I am delighted that Northumberland are in such a high group. For a relatively small County, it is a remarkable achievement to finish second in the group and although the team just missed promotion to Group 1, they are to be congratulated on their success.”
