Newcastle schools take part in first round of the Tony Blair Sports Foundation Year 3 Tennis Challenge Cup

Monday March 23rd saw 2 great events to kick start the Newcastle cluster stage of the prestigious regional wide competition.

The first event took place at the Northumberland Club, Jesmond which saw 6 schools complete matches and skills based activities across the morning.  The event was supported by 12 fantastic volunteers from Newcastle College, who did an outstanding job ensuring the year 3 students had the best time!

First round saw the boys completing the skills and the girls competing against each other in their relevant matches.  They then swapped at half time to fully complete the event!  Kim Sanderson who organised the competition was thrilled by the standard of play but importantly the continuous smiles across the players faces.  It really was a perfect morning of tennis, with everyone putting in 100% throughout.  The skills based activities are great because they enable the players to further develop their core skills, which will help them in all aspects of their young lives.

Kim highlighted,

“This is the first cluster that we have ran from the Northumberland Club in partnership with the Northumberland Tennis Academy.  I have been going into the schools and it has been fantastic to get these young players into the game and we are all hoping the event has inspired them all to continue!  We cannot say enough thanks to the Newcastle College volunteers who were outstanding.  An overall fab event and we wish the 2 qualifiers the best in the Newcastle Final taking place in May.”

The results from the morning are as follows,

6th – Hotspur Primary

5th – Ravenswood Primary

4th – Broadway First

3rd – Grange First

2nd - Regent Farm First

1st – Brunton First

Brunton and Regent Farm will now compete at the Newcastle TBSF Year 3 Tennis Challenge Cup on May 19th 2015.

Newcastle then saw a 2nd event in the afternoon ran by Andy Reed and Carlos Caldeira who are coaches at Gosforth Tennis Club.  A further 4 schools took part at Kenton School.  Volunteers from Gosforth Academy and Kenton School were on hand to support the event.  All of them had received Tennis Leaders training prior to the competition and you could tell they were buzzing about the opportunity to get involved and learn new skills.  To say it was a dream event would be an understatement and that was really down to the volunteers being so fantastic and making the it so enjoyable for the players!

Andy and Carlos were thrilled with how it had gone,

“The event was absolutely spot on and we are really excited to continue the links between Gosforth Tennis Club and the schools involved.  Kenton School and Gosforth Academy volunteers were so engaging and they made the event so memorable!”

Following the activities the scores were collated and the final positions are below.  St Oswalds and North Fawdon will travel to Tennis @ Churchill on May 19th to compete in the Newcastle Schools Final.
