Thursday 3rd of May saw the North East Schools Year 3 Tennis Challenge Cup hosted by the Northumberland Tennis Academy, and led by local coach Alison Cartmell. Four primary schools from the local community participated in a variety of tennis and skill based activities. Schools including Brunton First, Broadway East, Grange First, Archbishop Runcie First participated in the Jesmond cluster event.
The pupils took part in every task with enthusiasm and desire to do their best. Teammates encouraged each other, whilst also showing good spirit by cheering on their opponents. There were a number of challenging activities and with the invaluable support from Newcastle College volunteers everyone succeeded, enjoyed themselves and had a blast!
As mentioned above the event would not have run so successfully without the exceptional assistance from Newcastle College students. They helped umpire the mini tennis matches along with the skills based activities. All the students who are completing Sports Coaching at the College were fantastic at engaging and motivating the kids to keep them going throughout the day.
Jo Cunliffe, Regional Tennis Participation manager, stated: “Today was excellent to see all the young players enjoying tennis and learning new skills. We didn’t even need to ask if they’d enjoyed the day; we could tell by the huge smiles on their faces from start to finish!”.
A huge congratulations to all schools for giving their best! It was great to see all the school representing their respective school to a high standard. It was a close event and the final scores are below:
1st = Brunton First
2nd = Grange First

The scores mean Brunton First School and Grange First School qualify through to the Newcastle Final taking place at Tennis @ Churchill on Wednesday June 6th.
