Liam Broady

Liam Broady has won the AEGON Junior Player of the Month award for June.

The British junior, who trains at the Nottingham Tennis Centre with Mark Hilton,  won the Grade 1 ITF in Roehampton before going on to finish as runner up in the boys' singles and semi-finalist in the boys' doubles at Junior Wimbledon.

In the earlier parts of the month Broady competed in men's ATP Challenger qualifying events at the AEGON Trophy and AEGON Nottingham Challenge, before he turned his attentions to the highest graded events on the junior circuit.

The AEGON Junior International, Roehampton, took place on the grass courts of the Bank of England Sports Ground in London where Broady had reached the last 16 in 2010 before falling to eventual winner James Marsalek.

This year Broady swept through the draw, dropping just two sets on his way through six matches, as he won the title, beating a different nationality of opponent in each round.

After straight set victories in his first two matches Broady played the top seed and world junior No.1 Jiri Vesely in the last 16 and won it in the final set tie-break, emerging a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(6) victor.

Further two set victories came in the quarter and semi-finals, the latter match against the Wimbledon 2011 boys' doubles champion Mate Pavic, before the British junior played Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia in the final.

Broady was stretched to three sets but dominated the final set as he ended up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 winner.

A week later and Broady was back on the grass courts, this time at the All England Lawn Tennis Club as he took part in his third Junior Wimbledon.

After negotiating his opening two round Broady again met Vesely in the last 16 and this time went one better, defeating the Czech No.1 seed in straight sets.

In the Wimbledon quarter-finals Broady played on Court 18, home of the epic Isner v Mahut marathon men's match in 2010, and, along with Robin Kern (GER), they produced an epic of their own. On this occasion Broady emerged victorious after a 7-694), 4-6, 13-11 win.

17 year old Broady then played two Australians in succession and after a straight sets semi-final win against Jason Kubler the final set of the final was just one match too far and Broady was beaten 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 by Luke Saville.

Not only did Broady finish runner up in the singles event he also reached the semi-finals of the doubles at Junior Wimbledon, where he was the defending champion, before a loss to the eventual winners Mate Pavic and, fellow British junior, George Morgan.

His outstanding month and grass court season has propelled Broady to world junior No.7 and British junior No.1 and he will still be eligible to compete in junior events in 2012 as well.
