The venue for 2013’s Under 9’s summer county cup was Northampton’s Kings Park . All 6 players were focussed throughout the warm up and raring to go when the first matches were called. First up was a match against Lincolnshire, Daniel Wright suffered an extremely close 3 set defeat in one of the matches of the tournament. Pheonix Weir pulled off a great a win at number 3 with a phenomenal performance and Eva Straw and Jess Spencer both won their singles leaving the match hanging in the balance. Millie Wileman was 6-3 down in the final set and it was looking likely that Lincolnshire would nip the tie, however Millie turned it around saving 5 match points in the progress and put the tie out of sight. The importance of that win became clear as Notts lost the opening 2 doubles matches, Jess and Millie then saw the tie home with a comfortable win, Notts 5, Lincs 4 !!!
Our second match was against home county Northants, Phoenix started slowly but took a good win swiftly followed by Noah Johnson taking a very good win with a confident display. This was followed by wins for Daniel Wright again in a 3 set battle. It was then the girls turn, with extremely good performances from Eva, Jess and Millie. This meant Notts had won the tie going into the doubles, the boys lost their doubles as did our mixed team but again the girls rallied to find the win. Notts 7- Northants 2
This meant the final tie against Leicestershire was a winner takes all affair with both counties going into the tie unbeaten. Pheonix again showed great resolve to find a win when things were going against him. Noah and Daniel both lost but can be proud of their performances. Eva lost a close encounter as did Jess who played fantastically despite her loss, Millie then won again in a great 3 set match against an extremely tough opponent. Unfortunately the boys missed out on their doubles match meaning the event went to Leicestershire. Notts 2 Leicestershire 7
This meant Notts finished a very respectable 2nd.
Special mentions to Pheonix Weir and Millie Wileman who both won all of their singles matches, and again to Eva Straw and Millie Wileman who were awarded the referees fair play awards.
A great performance from all the team with each player showing a great attitude throughout. It was a real pleasure to captain such a great team that supported each other for the whole day.
