The team started this season in Division 3A following a series of abject performances last year. What was required was a night of the long tennis racquets to rid the squad of its underperformers. This was achieved and the 2018 players dispatched to their respective care homes the team moved forward with a steely purpose.

Alan Philpott, Dave Watkins and Bob Bridges cruised to one victory after another. Bob Bridges marking his debut as a county player with considerable aplomb as well as driving the team to Ipswich in his top of the range Jag (something that might come in handy if we have to play East of Scotland away next season). Jim Stubbs strutted and fretted his hour upon the stage managing a couple of singles wins; if it wasn’t for the Tennis Integrity Unit a large dose of pre-match Fluoxetine might solve his inability to hit a forehand on his many match points.    Dave Carter and Nick Shelvey left their sheltered accommodation for an afternoon to rescue the team when we were struggling with injuries, resulting in a win over Wiltshire, our only close match. Modesty must forbid me, as captain, from “large-ing” myself up; suffice it to say that I played like Eddie Fox in his Millfield days.

Winning promotion, undefeated we approach next season with confidence and if injuries and arthritis can be avoided look forward to the same success. The team photograph unhappily could only encompass three players as two of our number failed to turn up for it, something which has been noted and will be taken into account when it comes to selection next year.
