Make 2012 a time for Tennis!

Monday, December 19, 2011

People between the ages of 14 and 25 in South Oxfordshire are being encouraged to sign up for a free tennis course to see if they fancy taking up the sport on a long term basis.

From January 2012 South Oxfordshire District Council will be linking up with Community Tennis Association CIC to bring a series of free tennis sessions to Didcot and Crowmarsh Community Tennis Clubs.

Participants will be able to come along to one of the free six week courses on offer and attend the hour-long sessions to give the sport a go.

The sessions are part of a new Sportivate project being run in South Oxfordshire.  Sportivate is part of Sport England’s Places People Play legacy designed to encourage participation in continued sport and activity for those aged between 14 and 25 years old.  The programme targets those who are not currently choosing to participate regularly in sport.

Cllr Bill Service, cabinet member for leisure, said: “These sessions will give young people a great chance to pick up a racket and try their hand at tennis.  Sessions like this help to encourage people who are less active to try out a new sport or activity which may lead them to taking it up as a long-term interest, helping to improve their health and fitness.”

Didcot and Crowmarsh Gifford Tennis Clubs only have space for 60 people to take advantage of these 6-week free tennis courses, so be quick and sign up now!

You will need to sign up no later than the 31 January 2012 and the 60 spaces up for grabs are on a first come first serve basis.  Course times will be announced in early February.

Ed Nieburg of Community Tennis Association CIC, said: “We are thrilled to be able to offer these free courses through our Didcot and Crowmarsh Community Tennis Clubs.  They are a great introduction to tennis and will give players the opportunity to learn the basics of the game.  Our main objective is to make tennis accessible to everyone and we do this by reducing the price barrier that restricts people to learn and enjoy tennis."
