The Oxfordshire Junior County Closed tournament began on Saturday, 27 August at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre, with a total of 30 children playing in 8 & Under Mixed and Girls and Boys 9 & Under events. The children and parents enjoyed a great day and thanks must go to Liz Fidler, the referee, and her helpers Patricia Valimaa and Joshy Richards.
The 10’s, 12’s, 14’s, 16’s and 18’s events were played at North Oxford Lawn Tennis Club, and included singles, doubles and consolations. The weather throughout was perfect, which meant that we did not lose any time due to rain, and the Finals were played on Saturday as planned. There was some excellent tennis and everyone had a most enjoyable week. The results are attached. Through out the week 158 players competed in 249 matches.
Mark Wilkinson, member of the Management Committee, presented the prizes to the Winners and Runners-up. Neil Allen, our referee, had a very difficult job choosing the recipient of the John Parsons Trophy, which is awarded to the player who has contributed most throughout the tournament. In the end it was awarded to Sebastian Rey for his notable sportsmanship.
I would like to thank our sponsors, Amer Sports, who donated the Wilson balls, North Oxford LTC and the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre for the use of their facilities. I would also like to thank the Committee who worked extremely hard to ensure the event ran smoothly, Neil Allen the referee, Viveca Valimaa, Neil’s assistant, Alison and Ellie Jackson, Jill Northover, and Gill and George Collier who took on the demanding role of Court Supervisors. Thanks must also go to Rosemary Rey for organising the trophies and presentations and Karen Richards and Emma and Georgie for providing refreshments through out the week.
This is my last Junior County Closed and I would like to thank all the children who have participated over the past 8 years, their parents for their support and all the people who have helped me with the organisation of this event. Very many thanks.
