Oxfordshire tennis star Alexis Canter won the Under 16s Nike Junior National Tennis Championships in style last Friday with a crushing 6-3, 6-0 win over Finn Bass.
Number one seed Canter dropped just one set on his way to the final at Nottingham Tennis Centre where he lost only three games against second seed Bass from Cambridge.
And Canter, who has now emulated the likes of Andy Murray, Tim Henman and Heather Watson by winning the tournament, described lifting the trophy as an “amazing feeling”.
“There are some pretty impressive winners on here,” said the 16-year-old.
“I’m so proud to be up there with them.
“I saved my best tennis of the week for Friday, as a player you want to be continually improving as the tournament progresses, so it was a perfect week for me.”
He continued: “It was a great week.
“One that I will remember for a long time.
“There were some really tough matches that, looking back on now, I am very happy with how I played.
“It’s a fantastic tournament and I’m over the moon.”
Canter dominated from the first game, breaking Bass’ serve to stamp an early lead.
Both players exchanged powerful hitting from the baseline, but it was Canter’s consistency and lack of errors that gave him the edge.
Bass battled hard and saved three set points to break Canter’s serve in the seventh game, but the number one seed responded immediately to break back and take the first set.
Canter’s forthright attitude continued in the second set as he repeatedly snuffed out any opportunity Bass had to get back into the match.
Showing outstanding court coverage Canter kept a strangle hold on every game and denied his opponent any momentum.
“I had to really focus at the start of the second set,” said Canter.
“If I had let Finn back in at that stage it could have been very different.
“I felt like I used my forehand really well – I moved well around it which allowed me to dominate points.”
