The 44th staging of the Scottish Junior Inter District Championships concluded at Kilgraston School on Saturday with Central District and West of Scotland sharing the overall championship for 2018.
Central won two age group titles - retaining its 12 & Under title against West in the final and taking the 15 & Under championship with a final 4-2 victory over West. West had consolation in the 18 & Under competition where a tie-break shoot-out decided the outcome of the oldest age group against Tayside and earned a share of the overall championship. North East, the overall champions in 2017, defended its title valiantly but finished in 5th position behind Tayside and East of Scotland.
Still as popular as ever with players, parents and coaches, the event enjoyed every kind of weather at Kilgraston School in Bridge of Earn, Perthshire. Three inches of snow delayed the start of play on the opening day with play transferred to the indoor courts of Strathallan School and Gleneagles Arena. With an early hard frost followed by bright sunshine on Day 2, players were given an opportunity of experiencing all outdoor conditions. Throughout the four days of play, over 250 matches were played by 96 players representing eight of Scotland’s District Associations.
Team Ayrshire won the annual Inter-District team quiz for the first time in the event’s history with a remarkable display of sporting and general knowledge.
Around 250 spectators attended the early evening presentation carried out by Tennis Scotland President David Mazzucco. It was agreed that the event displayed all that is good in junior tennis with players being fiercely competitive in representing their District team whilst having great fun at the same time. Once again, every player left with great memories of a fantastic tennis experience.
