The East Lothian Open Tennis Tournament is the winner of the prestigious Tennis Scotland Tournament of the Year accolade for 2017, having previously lifted the same title two years ago.
The East Lothian Open boasts entries in excess of 500 across four venues – North Berwick, Dunbar, Gullane and Musselburgh - engaging membership at each club and empowering them to take ownership of their site during the event.
In addition to the tennis competitions, which boasts an age range from 6 to 86, a host of social events are held throughout the week including a BBQ, quiz, cheese and wine and putting, giving tennis players and non-players alike plenty of opportunities to become involved and make new friends.
Such is the tournament’s reputation that competitors travel from all over the United Kingdom to take part and such is its popularity that the start date has been brought forward from the Monday to the Sunday in recent years with all six courts being utilised on day one between 9 am and 9 pm for the veterans alone.
One of the tournament organisers, Iain Miller commented, “The East Lothian Open (ELO) Committee and I are delighted to receive this award – the ELO creates friendships for life, and witnessing the enjoyment the tournament brings to players of all ages, experience, and abilities makes it a pleasure to organise. For us, though, the real award winners are the families and players who year after year create such a wonderfully atmospheric, social, fun & competitive week for all players across the 39 events the tournament has. A huge thank you to the hosting clubs, the local communities, the East Lothian council and the officials from Tennis Scotland for their incredibly enthusiastic support of the tournament. Roll on ELO 2018!”
