Patrick Young and Mathilde Sreeves are Scotland’s 18 & Under Indoor champions for 2017. In the boy’s competition semi-final, Young [Stonehaven] beat Douglas MacIntosh in three sets to move into the final. In the bottom half of the draw, Charlie Miller [Newlands] won through to the final without loss of a set. Young dominated the opening set of the final before Miller fought back to level at one set all. The Stonehaven player won an epic 22 point championship tie-break to take the title.
Sreeves, winner of the 14 & Under title in 2016, beat top seed Milly Wood in the 2nd Round on her way to the final of the girl’s competition. In the final she met Chloe Compson, now based in Florida, who had beaten two seeds and lost only 8 games in three matches. Compson raced to a 5-2 first set lead before Sreeves battled back to win the set in a tie-break. Sreeves, currently training in Paris and a past member of the Strathgryffe club, held on to her advantage taking the second set 6-4 and the championship.
Gregor Stott [Giffnock], seeded 3, demonstrated his improvement over the past year winning the 14 & Under boy’s title in convincing style without loss of a set in four matches. In the final, Stott beat the unseeded Fraser Craig [Western] 6-4 6-1. David Lloyd Renfrew’s Erin Russell beat Ellie Crosbie [Prestwick] in the final match of the 14 & Under girl’s event. At the semi-final stage, Crosbie had beaten top seed Maisie Wood with Russell beating the second favourite Verada Kamate.
112 matches were played over the two days of competition. The 16 and 12 & Under championships will be played over the weekend of 11th /12th March at the same venue.
