A round-up of some of the action involving Scottish players last week

Connor Thomson reaches Final of the Abu Dhabi ITF Junior Championships

In his first competition of 2018, Connor Thomson reached the Final of the Singles and the Semi-Finals of the Doubles at the Abu Dhabi ITF Junior Championships in the United Arab Emirates.

Connor who was unseeded won a tough first round match against the 2nd seed L.Rottoli (ITA) over three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. He then comfortably won the 2nd round 6-1, 6-3 against T.Schneider (FRA), before needing three sets to get past qualifier F.Van Sambeek (NED), to reach the semi-final. In the semi-final Connor faced a difficult tie against Polish junior K.Paluch, who himself had managed to dispose of the 4th and 8th seeds respectively. Connor won the match 6-4, 6-3 which put him through to the final to face 3rd seed M.Shah (IND). The final couldn’t have started much better for Connor, winning the first set 6-1. However he began to tire losing the next two sets 7-5, 6-4.

In the doubles, Connor teamed up with the Polish player he beat in the singles and the pair got off to a great start, winning their first game 6-3, 3-6 [10-8] and then beating the 4th seeds 6-3, 6-0. The pair however lost out to the top seeds and eventual winners M.Geporgescu (ROM) & H.Rune(DEN) in a thrilling match-tie break which the top seeds won 15-13.

This week Connor will stay out the UAE to take part in the Fujairah ITF Junior Championships where he will be looking to go one better.

SF for Gordon Reid in Sydney

In his preparation for the Australian Open, Gordon Reid reached the semi-final of the singles event as well as the final of the doubles at the Sydney Wheelchair Tennis Open.

4th seed Reid beat Japan’s Y.Fujimoto 6-0, 6-1 before comfortable beating 5th seed N.Peifer (FRA) 6-1, 6-3. Gordon was then drawn against his doubles partner and fellow Brit Alfie Hewett in the semi-finals, which Alfie won 6-0, 6-4.

In the doubles draw, the British pairing saw off the Japanese duo, before beating the 3rd seeds J.Gerard (BEL) and S.Olsson (SWE) 6-4, 6-4. They then met the French pairing of S.Houdet and N.Peifer who got their own back after Gordon defeated Peifer in the singles draw, by winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

This week Gordon will carry on his preparation for the Australian Open, as he takes part in the Melbourne Wheelchair Tennis Open, where he will be looking to have a good performance in the build up to the Grand Slam which begins next week for the Wheelchair athletes.

Not to be for Norrie in Australian Open Qualifying

It wasn’t to be for Cameron Norrie at the Australian Open this year as he looked to qualify for his third major main draw.

Cameron won his first qualifying round tie again Canadian F.Peliwo 6-1,6-7, 6-4 however lost out to Australian J.Smith in the 2nd round 4-6, 2-6.
