The first ever LTA Scottish Regional Visually Impaired Tournament was held on the indoor courts at Newlands Tennis Club, Glasgow on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th July.
Thirty six players from across the UK entered in to singles and doubles events in their respective categories. B1 (blind) who are allowed up to 3 bounces and play only in the service boxes of a full-size court with some of the lines having tactile marking. They also compete wearing eye-shades; B2 who are allowed up to 3 bounces and play on a 3/4 length court; B3 who are allowed up to 2 bounces and play on a 3/4 length court; B4/5 who are allowed only one bounce and play on a 3/4 length court. All the players play with an audible ball.
Among those attending were seven Scottish players who train weekly at Glasgow Disability Tennis, an International entry from Germany and five players who represented Great Britain in their category in the International Blind Tennis Tournament that took place in Dublin last year bringing home four gold medals and one silver medal between them.
All the matches were umpired by ABTO officials and a brilliant team of volunteers supported the players on and off court over the weekend.
On the Saturday evening, 40 people attended a buffet meal held at the club.
