The finalists for this years Scottish Inter Club Challenge Cup have been decided after the semi-finals were held over the weekend.
In the men's draw, Thorn Park and Giffnock will contest the 2017 final of the Scottish Inter-Club Challenge Cup. Edinburgh club Thistle trailed 2-4 after the second round to the 2015 champions Thorn Park and then conceded the third round rubbers to allow the Bearsden club to progress to the final. Meanwhile Giffnock men travelled north to Aberdeen to meet the current holders of the title David Lloyd Aberdeen. The Glasgow club led 3-0 after completion of the first round and then won two rubbers in Round 2 to secure a 5-1 victory. Giffnock last won the championship in 2010 and will start this Sunday's final as slight favourites. Thorn Park could however cause an upset if they receive a favourable draw.
Newlands, winners of the women’s competition 11 times, had a 6-0 home win over David Lloyd Aberdeen, winners in 2015, in Saturday’s semi-final. The north-east team put up a strong challenge against the current champions who progress to the final to play Blackhall who ended the run of season’s runners-up Dunfermline in the other semi-final. Blackhall have been Scottish champions 5 times, four years in succession in the early seventies and most recently in 2013. The women’s final is wide open and could be won by either team if they field their strongest sides. The championship may again be decided by the draw.
Thistle 2, Thorn Park 7; David Lloyd Aberdeen [holders] 1, Giffnock 5
Dunfermline 1, Blackhall 5; Newlands [holders] 6, David Lloyd Aberdeen 0.
Both finals will be played at Craiglockhart Sports Centre, Edinburgh on Sunday 25th June starting at 11.00 am. Full draws can be found at Scottish Inter-Club Challenge Cup 2017.
