Volunteers' Week 1-7 June | Ross Taylor

Thursday, June 01, 2017

Volunteers' Week (1-7 June) helps to recognise the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day. Throughout the week Tennis Scotland will be highlighting a small number of the wonderful volunteer workforce that has helped to grow and sustain the game in Scotland.

Ross Taylor
University Tennis Ambassador
Abertay University

What encouraged you to get involved in Tennis/Volunteering:
I first got involved in tennis as a junior at Drumchapel LTC and, growing up under the influence of my grandpa and club coach Eric Flack, I got to experience helping him out on Saturdays with the kids classes. My passion for the sport and volunteering within it grew from there as I gained the confidence to help create a school club, help run competitions and eventually go on to get my coaching qualifications (Currently level 3) to support my passion for helping people play tennis.

What do you do out with Tennis? (Job/Other Hobbies):
I’m a 4th year student at Abertay University, and so much of my time is spent devoted to studying, however I also have a “regular” job in Dundee’s city centre. I enjoy travelling (around Scotland and abroad), relaxing with friends, catching up with family and taking in other sports such as rugby, football and ice hockey.

What does your average volunteering day look like:
Usually it involves planning tennis lessons and working with the very supportive team at the University to help grow the programme. This varies from emails, meetings, presentations and phone calls to fun things like open days, pop-up tennis, touchtennis and cheering on fellow students in competitions around the country!

Favourite moment when volunteering:
There are so many to choose from but I would have to say my earliest memories of coaching wth my grandpa. It was fun, personal and it was the launchpad for everything i’ve been able to achieve since!

What would you say to anyone looking to volunteer:
Volunteering is such a rewarding experience and one that is full of surprises, fun and opportunity. Whether you know what you want to do or have no idea where you’d like to be in the future - volunteer, you never know what it can do for you and those around you!
