Volunteers' Week 1-7 June | Mark Gaffney

Monday, June 05, 2017

Volunteers' Week (1-7 June) helps to recognise the contribution volunteers make to our communities every day. Throughout the week Tennis Scotland will be highlighting a small number of the wonderful volunteer workforce that have helped to grow and sustain the game in Scotland.

Name:
Mark Gaffney

Role/Position:
East Lothian Open Tournament Director (with Iain Miller, Teddington - previously of Broughty Ferry)

Club:
St Serf's LTC

What encouraged you to get involved in Tennis/Volunteering:
My Mum played the game and got me started at St Serf's, the local club when I was old enough to join (8). Before that, I played Short Tennis, as it was then, and have played ever since.

What do you do out with Tennis? (Job/Other Hobbies):
Opportunities and Events Manager at Scottish Disability Sport

What does your average volunteering day look like:
The tournament runs from Sunday to saturday, across 4 venues in east Lothian. During the tournament itself its pretty intensive with matches starting at 8.30am with play throughout until well after 10pm at night. early mornings and late evenings for 7 days mean weare a very bleary-eyed pair by Finals Day! It's basically a massive jigsaw to complete, whilst not quite knowing what all the pieces look like. Thankfully, iain brings the brains to this operation. it is an all year round commitment and the work - Iain in particular - puts in,in the run-up to the event is incredible.

Favourite moment when volunteering:
Whenever someone discovers the tournament for the first time and goes on to become a regular fixture.

What would you say to anyone looking to volunteer:
As someone who works in sports in Scotland, I see everyday the massive impact volunteers make in sport. In short, sport can not happen effectively without the considerable input of volunteers. Find something you can enjoy, get involved and bring your own ideas to the table and help make Scotland a more active nation. Volunteering is something to be immensely proud of.

Quickfire Round
Favourite Tennis Player – Stefan Edberg
Favourite Grand Slam - Australian Open
Favourite Scottish Tournament - The East Lothian Open of course, otherwise the West Highland tennis Championship - great people in a great town
