High School of Glasgow has won the West Region Primary Schools County Finals 2017 at Scotstoun.
This is the eighth year the event has been running, with this year seeing a rise in the number of Local Authorities and schools taking part. Over 100 schools and 400 children have taken part in the event across the West region. Each Local Authority organised its own tournament within their area at a local tennis club, with the winning teams going forward to the regional finals at Scotstoun on the 4th June 2017.
On the day of the Regional Finals 40 children from 10 different Schools took part with High School of Glasgow winning the event. This was the first time High School of Glasgow have won the event, having finished second last year.
All the children were excellent with many close matches across the day. It was also great to see so many parent and teachers encouraging and supporting their respective schools. This event is the end product of all the great tennis activity that has been going on in the local primary schools over the year. Therefore a special thanks goes to the Active Schools Coordinators, Sports Development Officers, Teachers and Schools that helped organise this year's event.
Tennis Scotland Regional Development Manager, Mike Cohen, said: "The Primary Schools competition is a great event to attract children from a young age into tennis. Mini Tennis for this age group can be played in a small gym hall or dining area so it is ideal for Primary Schools. It is great to see the event continue to expand each year with a record number of schools taking part in this year’s event. This is down to the hard work on the ground by teachers, Active Schools and Sport Development, and Clubs to create an interest in tennis in the schools".
