112 fiercely contested matches were played over two days at the Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow where the 16 & Under and 12 & Under indoor champions for 2017 were decided.
Charlie Miller, seeded 3 in the 16 & Under boys event, beat Ellis Short from London 6-4 6-4 in a two hour final to take the championship. In the morning semi-finals, Short had upset top seed Jed Alexander from Perth 7-6(3) 3-6 [10-8] whilst Miller, a member of Newlands but now studying and training at Merchiston School in Edinburgh, beat Giffnock’s Gregor Stott 7-5 6-2 in a match of high quality.
Alicia Gates, also from the Giffnock club, won the girls title without loss of a set beating Julia Smith from Kilmacolm 6-2 6-2 in the final. Smith, initially a reserve for the girls draw, was called up only the day before the event started, won through three rounds of matches on her way to the final beating top seed and holder Jodie McLelland on her way.
In the 12 & Under events, favourite Matthew Rankin from Edinburgh justified his top seeding with a 7-5 6-2 final win over Ben Hudson. The Dundee based third seed pushed the favourite all the way in the opening set in a hard-hitting match in the youngest age group. The girls title went south of the border with top seed Anais Fernandez-Laaksonen from Kent beating second seed Heather Barlow [Newlands] 6-4 6-1 in the final.
