A round-up of some of the action involving Scottish players last week.

US Open

Current US Open Men’s Double Champion, Jamie Murray is through to the 2nd week of the US Open in both the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In the Men’s Doubles, with Bruno Soares, the pair beat J. Knowle and A. Peya 6-4, 7-6 in Round 1, before defeating M. Daniell and M. Demoliner 7-6, 6-3 in the 2nd Round. The pair will now play R. Lindstedt and J. Thomson for a place in the Quarter-Finals. In the mixed doubles, Jamie and partner Martina Hingis have carried on their title success from Wimbledon into the US Open, reaching the Quarter-Finals. The pair will now play A. Spears and J. Cabal for a place in the Semi-Finals.

After his brilliant results in the qualifying, Cameron Norrie carried on his fantastic form to win his first major main draw tie against Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov. In the 2nd Round however Cameron met 12th seed Pablo Carreno Busta who proved too strong, winning in straight sets. Pablo has since gone on to reach the Quarter-Finals where he faces Diego Schwartzman.

Ali Collins was unable to get through the Girl’s qualifying, losing in the last round to Ukrainian 9th seed Viktoriia Dema. Ali will however play in the Girl’s Doubles where she will play with Jule Niemeier of Germany.

In the US Open USTA Wheelchair Championships. It was not to be for Gordon Reid after losing out to S.Kunieda (JPN) in the QF of the Men’s singles and then losing out at the semi-final stage of the Men’s Doubles with partner Alfie Hewett.

Aidan McHugh is the last Scottish player who will feature at this year’s US Open. More details on Aidan’s recent results can be found below.

Aidan McHugh among the best in Montreal

Aidan McHugh will be heading into the Boy’s US Open draw in brilliant form after reaching the Semi-final of the Grade 1 tournament in Montreal. Aidan won the 1st round 6-4, 6-4 before beating the 15th seed comfortably 6-0, 6-1. Things started to get a bit tougher for Aidan as he faced the 4th seed and World No.14 M. Vrbensky (CZE) but performed brilliantly to recover from one set down, to win the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the Quarters Aidan faced another of the seeded players, this time the 10th seed from Russia and again recovered from one set down to win the tie 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. After winning the first set in the Semi-final he eventually lost out in 3 sets, losing 6-4, 3-6, 4-6.

Aidan also reached the Quarter-Finals of the doubles with partner Thiago Seyboth Wild (BRA), losing out in a very close 3rd set tie break 10-8.

He now goes into the US Open Junior Championships looking to create another upset after being drawn against one of America’s top players and 11th seed, Oliver Crawford. In the doubles draw, Aidan will team up with Francesco Forti of Italy and will take on an Argentinean pair in the first round.

Maia Lumsden

Over the last three weeks, Maia has based herself in Poland taking part in a number of ITF events there. In recent weeks Maia has reached a Quarter-Final and Semi-Final in the Singles and a Final in the Doubles. Last week she added to this success by reaching another semi-final. In the earlier rounds Maia didn’t drop a set and was 1 set up in her semi-final tie, however eventually lost 6-2, 1-6, 1-6 to the eventual winner and 2nd seed Monika Kilnarova (CZE).

Scott Duncan and Robert Leck

Scott Duncan and Robert Leck both managed to qualify for the Turkey F32 Futures event however the Stirling University pair lost out in straight sets in their opening matches of the main draw. Scott also featured in the doubles draw with playing partner Conor Berg (USA), where they reached the Quarter-finals with a victory over the 2nd seeds.
