The Shropshire 14U boys team travelled up to the Graves Tennis Centre in Sheffield this weekend for their annual County Cup event. They had been put in a tough group, with Surrey and East of Scotland during the first two days.
Surrey, who ended up runners up over the weekend, were very strong and we lost 6-0. East Of Scotland, who ended up third, beat us 5-1, with Jordan Evans and Matt Hunt gaining our only win by winning 12-10 in a third set tiebreak in the doubles.
This meant that we had South of Scotland to play on the final day for 5th place. We had good wins from Tom Loxley and Will Abbatt in the singles to take us 2-0 ahead. Chris Wood had a tough singles match and eventually lost it 7-5 in the third set, and with Jordan Evans losing too the tie was at 2-2 going into the doubles.
Again Matt and Jordan won their doubles match to give us the lead again, but Chris and Tom lost to finish the tie at 3-3. This meant that a doubles tiebreak 'shoot out' would decide the winners, with Jordan and Matt selected to play it. Unfortunately, they lost 10-4 leaving Shropshire 6th in the group.
