June 2014

With the great coverage of the French Open recently there has been a real buzz of excitement at Stowmarket tennis club with players practising for both the team matches and their own annual tournament matches.

The tournament was held from Sunday 25th May to Saturday 31st May over the Whitsun half-term.

The Suffolk Girls Under 10 Team performed superbly in the Aegon County Cup at the weekend, competing on home soil at Woodbridge and winning their qualifying group without losing any matches, or indeed, dropping a single set. A highly talented quartet of Isabelle Eaton, Maddie McLoughlin, Justice Hall and Tawana Sewah, all training at the Sports Club with Chris Daynes, were in a class of their own and swept aside the opposition.

The Great British Tennis Weekend in mid-May was an undoubted success, many Suffolk clubs laying on a wide range of free tennis activities for all members of the family, the two days blessed by warm sunshine ! The programme goes rolling on into June and July, with David Lloyd welcoming in tennis enthusiasts once again, and a number of other clubs joining the party.

Hard to believe that this Monday will see Andy Murray stepping on to Centre Court as he starts his campaign to defend his Wimbledon title.

Suffok’s 10U quartet of Isabelle Eaton, Maddie McLoughlin, Justice Hall and Tawana Senah  put up a fantastic performance in the Aegon National Finals at the Bolton Arena, finishing 4th against the country’s best. Having beaten Cornwall 4-0 and Hampshire 3-1 on the opening day, this highly promising team went oh so close against both Staffordshire and the mighty Lancashire on the Sunday, putting Suffolk tennis firmly on the national map.
