Rising stars make late bid for Masters qualification

THE best of North Wales’ young tennis talent starred at the Wrexham Tennis Centre’s third Wrexham Mini Tennis County Tour for the 2010-11 Winter Series.

They were joined by impressive players from the North West region to compete in the Red (under 8s), Orange (U9s) and Green (U10s) groups and gain vital points towards the end-of-season Masters Event, which will be held on Sunday, March 20.

After some closely fought matches in the Red Group round robin, the top two players from each of the four mini-groups went through to the semi-finals.

Deeside’s Kristian Harrison, Charlie Liptrot (Ellesmere Port), Callum Williams (Llandudno) and Molly Jones (Frodsham) went through and it was Williams who faced Harrison in the final.

Williams came out on top winning 10-6.

In the Orange group Katie Land (Wrexham), Cai Llwyd Jones (Bangor), Laura Holmes (Ellesmere Port) and Danny Urey (Warrington) Llwyd Jones claiming the final beating Urey 7-6, 3-7, 7-2.

The Green title went to Mold’s Nathan Caines after he defeated Morgan Harding of Wrexham 4-1 in the final.
