A South Wales girls tennis team has won through to the national finals of the AEGON Team Tennis National Championships.
David Lloyd Cardiff girls 12-and-under team won their group with a decisive 6-0 win over second-placed Loughborough, having also beaten Tennis Buddies from Lincoln, University of Warwick and Nottingham.
The winners of the four divisions across Britain qualify for the National Finals at the National Tennis Centre, Roehampton on July 23-24.
Girls team captain Katherine Maddock-Lyon congratulated her team of Alex Oelmann, Rebekah O'Loughlin, Olivia Chivers and Phoebe Cuthbertson-Smith.
“I am proud of the effort and commitment shown by the girls, and they thoroughly deserve their place at the finals,” she said. “It will be a great experience for all of them. Thanks to the parents for their support.”
The team’s success is the latest achievement for junior tennis in Wales, which now boasts some of the best players in Britain for their age group.
“This is a great achievement for Katherine and the girls,” said Peter Drew, chief executive of Tennis Wales. “Junior tennis in Wales is really at a high standard now, and I wish the team every success in the finals at Roehampton.”
