Veteran South Wales tennis player Chris Hill has moved into the world top 10 of over-55 doubles players, after winning the British doubles title at Oxford.
Hill, from Abertillery, and his playing partner Tony King of Birmingham, beat Shamus Donald of Scotland and Bruce Young (Oxford) 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to take the over-55s British grass court championship.
They reached the final with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over Alan McGibbon of Liverpool and John Winston (Twyford) in the semi-final.
Previous winners of the title include French Open winner and Tennis Hall of Fame member Jaroslav Drobny.
The result completes an impressive hat-trick for Hill, who won the British Indoor Championship in January and was a finalist in the British Clay Court Championship in May.
He is now ranked eighth in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) world rankings.
“This is another great achievement for Chris,” said Tennis Wales chief executive, Peter Drew. “Tennis is one of the few games that can be played competitively and recreationally at all ages, and Chris is a real inspiration.
“Clubs throughout Wales welcome players over 50 – not just those looking for competition, but especially those who want the social and health benefits of sport, even if they haven’t picked up a racket since school.”
