1,500 South Wales children in Primary Schools tennis championship

More than 1,500 pupils from 179 schools took part in the AEGON South Wales Primary Schools Tennis Championship, with winners coming from across the region.

“This competition always generates a lot of interest, and it was great to see so many youngsters taking part,” said Simon Clarke, South Wales tennis development manager at Tennis Wales.

In all, 1,556 took part in 413 teams, with 15 of the 17 local authorities running local qualifying events.

The top teams came together at the finals at David Lloyd Cardiff.

Winners were:

Year 3:

Girls – Evenlode (Vale of Glamorgan); Boys – Evenlode (Vale of Glamorgan); Mixed – Deri View (Monmouthshire).

Year 4/5:

Girls – St Michaels (Llanelli); Boys – Newton (Swansea);  Mixed – Sully (Vale of Glamorgan). 

Year 6:

Girls – Rhydypenau Primary (Cardiff); Boys – Llansannor (Vale of Glamorgan)

 

 “Congratulations to all the winners, and to everyone who took part,” added Simon Clarke. “Over the three finals events we’ve seen nearly 500 youngsters coming down and competing for their school and local authority. Matches were conducted in a fantastic spirit and the standard was quite high. The event was superbly supported by teachers and parents alike and a huge thank you must go to Mark, Becca, Claire, Steph, Rhys and Stuart for their support in running the three events as well as Katherine & David Lloyd Cardiff for hosting the finals.‘’

“We are already looking on building on the success for next year, with a target of 2,000 competitors from 200 schools.”
