Vale of Clwyd Tennis Tournament beats the weather

Monday, September 10, 2012

The annual Vale of Clwyd Open tennis tournament took place at the Ruthin Lawn Tennis Club between 23rd and 25th August.  Despite the poor forecast, Tournament Referee Trevor Webb was able to schedule all the matches and complete the tournament on time.  Many of the entrants were looking to repeat their previous successes at the Vale Tournament and to enhance their LTA tennis rankings.

The event was again sponsored by local businesses and by The Rotary Club of Ruthin, whose Youth Opportunities Committee aim to encourage and facilitate opportunities for youngsters in the area to participate in a variety of activities.

The 8u ‘Mini-Red’ boys winner was, once again, Stuart Shannon from Alvechurch.  The runner up was Flynn Birchall (Llandudno).  Stuart also won the 9u Mixed competition, beating Toby Rees-Sawson (Marford).

The 10u group winner was Sam Morris of Penyffordd, with Beca Hughes (Mold) the runner up.  Beca was also runner up in the 12u Girls category, which was won by Catrin Hughes (Mold).

William Hughes from Wrexham won the 12u Boys; runner up was Sebastian Birchall (Llandudno).

Taliesin Boswell of Glyn Ceiriog was the winner of the 14u boys competion, with Finn Nelson from home club Ruthin as runner up.  Last year’s runner up Rachel Yates from Mold won the 14u girls competition, ahead of Menna Edwards (Bangor) who put aside the disappointment and went on to win the 18u girls category and the Rotary Club cup.  Phoebe Thomas from Whitchurch was the runner up in this competition.

Winners’ trophies were presented by Bob Ellis, Chairman of the Youth Committee of sponsors The Rotary Club of Ruthin.  Bob congratulated all those who took part.

This was the last tournament to be refereed by Trevor Webb, who has been the mainstay of tournaments in North Wales for many years.  To mark the occasion, Ruthin Lawn Tennis Club presented Trevor with a commemorative gold medal, and Bob Moore presented him with a bottle of whisky on behalf of Tennis Wales.
