South Wales men win promotion in County Cup

Wednesday, December 04, 2013

The South Wales men’s tennis team won their group competition in Scotland to gain promotion to the top flight of the Winter County Cup.

The team, captained by Cardiff-based Chris Lewis, from Neath, scored 9-0 wins over home team East of Scotland and Sussex, before a final-day showdown with Yorkshire, which the Welshmen won 5-3.

“This was a terrific performance,” said Lewis. “We dominated East of Scotland and Sussex, and then faced Yorkshire, who had also beaten both other teams – though by a less convincing margin.

“It couldn’t have been a more exciting finish, really. Winning this group means we are now playing in the top group in both the summer and winter County Cups.”

The teams consisted of:  Chris Lewis (captain, Neath), Evan Hoyt (Llanelli), Josh Milton (Rhoose), Luke Simeone, Craig Ingham (both Swansea), Craig Evans (Glynneath), and Jordan Helyer (Barry).

“This is more great news for tennis in Wales,” said Tennis Wales chief executive Peter Drew. “This year we have seen some truly outstanding performances from Wales in the senior team events - probably the most successful year ever for Welsh tennis.

“We are seeing more people of all ages playing tennis in new ways and at different venues, and success like this at the top level provides real inspiration for those considering taking up the sport.”
