Schools Tennis Roadshow arrives in Cardiff

Thursday, March 07, 2013

The Schools Tennis Road Show arrived in David Lloyd Cardiff this week with teachers, schools representatives & local authority teams getting the very latest information on how to inspire their pupils to get into tennis.

Since they began in 2009, more than 3,000 people have attended the Schools Tennis Road Show, which this year will visit 16 towns and cities across Great Britain.

The Schools Tennis Road Show aims to provide an overview of all the support available to schools, highlight new resources and products, and demonstrate practical ideas for delivering tennis in a school setting.

The Tennis Foundation’s Head of Education Tom Gibbins said: “The Road Show is a great chance for us to promote the resources available to support teachers to deliver tennis activities that inspire all their pupils that tennis is for them.”

Tutors Paul Williams and Phil Leighton put everyone through their paces with Cardio Tennis sessions – a tennis inspired workout played to up-tempo music – as well providing ideas on how to adapt and differentiate tennis activities to ensure all disabled young people are included and can achieve.

South Wales Tennis Development Manager Simon Clarke added: “it was a fantastic turnout out today, great to see so many new faces getting involved with the Tennis Foundations schools offer. The Cardio tennis in schools resource is a brilliant package that will enable hundreds of children and teachers the opportunity to get involved in the game. Lots of exciting discussions have already been had about rolling out the different courses across South Wales. ‘’

Hannah Rowlands, Urdd Sports Development Officer for Swansea & Neath Port Talbot, said: “Today we’ve been finding out about tennis to hopefully take back the ideas and deliver in our particular areas. We learnt some of the drills for Cardio Tennis and I think it’ll be great for young kids to give it a go and pick up a tennis racket; and will hopefully encourage them to attend their local community club in the future.”

Everyone that attends the Road Show will receive the Guide to Schools Tennis 2013, a Cardio Tennis teacher resource and an inclusive tennis teacher resource. A £50 Schools Tennis equipment voucher will also be awarded to all attendees, as well as entry into a prize draw to win one of 100 Schools Tennis Equipment Packs and a pair of tickets to an LTA Major Event in 2013.
