Wales win age-group title in tri-nations tournament
Wales’ 18-and-under tennis team beat Scotland and Ireland to take the tri-nations title in Cardiff.
The team, under captain Chris Lewis, included Evan Hoyt (Llanelli), Luke Simeone (Swansea) , Joely Lomas (Swansea), and Emily Watson (Colwyn Bay).
Both Evan and Luke won both their singles matches, and Joely and Emily won both both doubles, giving Wales 4-2 victories over both other nations.
Team captain, Cardiff-based Chris Lewis, said: “The team thoroughly deserved their category with 4-2 wins over both Scotland and Ireland. A strong first day where the team won five out of their six matches put us in a great position and we did well enough on the second day to close the matches out against both teams.
“Evan Hoyt was in good form playing in the event in between men's pro events in the UK and Joely Lomas and Luke Simeone won three out of their four matches.”
Wales’ 12U and 14U were less successful, but put in some encouraging performances.
