Howell's School, Llandaff, will be flying the flag for Wales at the Team Tennis Schools National Championship Finals at Graves Tennis Centre in Sheffield in July.
Four players, all from Cardiff, won the Avon, Gloucestershire and South Wales region of the competition, overcoming teams from Cheltenham Ladies College and Gloucestershire’s Dean Close School.
Poppy Davies and Holly Fernandez-Lewis won their singles matches, while Ismay Burch narrowly lost out. Meryl Bird played a tense match, with an hour-long opening set, but eventually won 5-7, 6-2, 11-9.
Holly and Ismay won their doubles match (6-1, 6-2) against Dean Close School, leading to an outright win for the girls.
“I’m very proud of the girls' performance throughout the group stage,” said Chris Baker, team captain and PE teacher at Howell's School. “We are now really looking forward to the National Finals. The girls have been outstanding so far, and they deserve their place at Sheffield given their hard work and determination.”
“It’s a fantastic result from the girls,” said Simon Clarke, Regional Participation Manager for Tennis Wales. “They will be up against good teams from England and Scotland but we are confident they will put in a great performance and do Wales proud.”
