Miss-Hits is a fun starter tennis programme for girls age 5-8. Miss-Hits was deisgned by Judy Murray along with one of her closest friends who is also a tennis coach, spending 18 months researching what little girls engage with, what other sports are doing for girls and what girls don't like about tennis. The programme was then piloted many times until they felt they got the programme both child and coach friendly!
So what is Miss-Hits? It's a 12 week programme, split into two x 6 week blocks. It's an indoor activity which means the team can use slow-moving, fun, colourful equipment that won't blow away in the wind or get wet. And neither will the kids! They use play equipment rather than tennis equipment, things like balloons, chiffon squares, hit mitts, frisbees and fluff balls. And much more. The programme includes a special Miss-Hits equipment pack which includes everything you will need to deliver 12 weeks of activity.
Miss-Hits is best delivered by female coaches and you must be trained to do so. It can be delivered in school gyms, community halls or even squash courts, as well as on indoor tennis courts.....because each class is created for just 8 girls.
Who are the Miss-Hits? They are a tennis playing girl gang made up of 6 animated characters and Billie the Ball Dog. Each character represents a tennis stroke - Faith Forehand, Bella Backhand, Valentina Volley, Sasha Smash, Selena Serve, Alejandra Ace. The girls learn about one character each week. Each character has their own theme tune, warm-up dance, magic symbol, trick, game... and of course, shot. Through the characters, the girls can learn more about tennis through following their adventures on the Miss-Hits website and by playing the KnockOut Tennis app which teaches them how to compete and keep score.
The aim for Miss-Hits is to create a social group which can go forward from Miss-Hits into Mini Tennis programmes with their new friends, improved coordination and a basic understanding of all of the main tennis shots.
If you'd like to become part of the Miss-Hits workforce, are able to commit to run Miss-Hits as part of your overall 2014/15 programme and can attend the workshop on the 20th November at Newport Tennis Centre from 10am-4pm, and are a level 2 coach and above, then please complete the form below by Friday 13th November and send it to Ellie Lewis – ellie.lewis@lta.org.uk
