Wales-wide tennis competitions encourage young players

Monday, September 01, 2014

Tennis Wales has teamed up with Sytner Mini to provide more opportunities for young players to get interested in tennis.

A series of three-hour events, organised and run by Tennis Wales, are being held in September in clubs around Wales. They will be aimed at players, born on or after April 1st 2006, who may not have participated in competitions before, such as those unrated or those rated Red 3 or Red 4.

Each event costs £5 and will incorporate relays, fun games, and umpired matches, and participants will receive a certificate and a t-shirt.

The dates and times of the events are as follows:

27th September - Mackintosh LTC, Cardiff (Time TBC)

28th September – Llantrisant LTC (10am-1pm)

28th September – Newport Tennis Centre (2.30pm-5.30pm)

27th September - Maldwyn Lesiure Centre, Newtown (Time TBC)

28th September – Rhyl Leisure Centre (9am-12pm)

28th September – Maes Glas, Bangor University (2pm-5pm)

“This partnership with Sytner Mini gives us the opportunity to provide more local competition for children who haven’t played many matches before,” said Ellie Lewis, National Workforce Manager for Tennis Wales. “Competition is the heart of the game where tennis is concerned so the Sytner Mini Cup events we are holding this year will expose children to match-play in a lighted hearted, fun and friendly environment, hopefully hooking them into our sport well into the future. We are also utilising the partnership to upskill our local volunteers to deliver more competitions at their venues to ensure that children can play matches on a regular basis.”
