Coach completes 25-hour tennis marathon

Tuesday, April 07, 2015

A South Wales tennis coach has played tennis continuously for 25 hours to raise money for charity.

Jonathan Morgan, head coach at Caerphilly Tennis Club, played against all coaching groups at the club, from under 5s through to members of the senior teams, as well as some guests from organisations including Tennis Wales and Sport Caerphilly.

The aim was to raise money for Velindre Cancer Centre, which has provided treatment for several club members and their families in recent years.

The time was set at 25 hours to celebrate the club’s 25th anniversary as a tennis establishment.

Morgan, 22, has enjoyed years of success at the club, having started at the age of six. He has progressed from volunteering to recently gaining his level 3 qualification and becoming the club’s head coach.

And after 25 hours of gruelling participation, Morgan managed to complete the challenge and raise an impressive £660 for Velindre.

Following the completion of the event, Morgan said it was “tough” but the local support managed to get him through it: “I’m still feeling some effects on my body a week or so later. But the support throughout and especially during the last hour on Sunday morning was amazing and definitely helped”.

The end of the challenge was witnessed by over 30 people and was followed by the unveiling of a commemorative plaque and celebratory cake to recognise the club’s 25th anniversary.

“What a great way to mark the club’s silver anniversary,” said Tennis Wales chief executive, Peter Drew. “Jonathan has made a fantastic effort for a very worthy cause.”
