The Wales tennis team has returned from the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa with gold, silver and bronze medals.
Matt Story (Cardiff Metropolitan University XL Academy and Bath University) won bronze in the boys’ singles, losing 6-3 6-1 to number six seed Ewen Lumsden of Scotland in the semi-final, but beating number five seed Eleftherios Neos of Cyprus in the bronze medal match.
In the girls’ singles, Joely Lomas (Swansea Tennis Centre; and Cardiff Metropolitan University XL Academy) met number one seed Dhruthi Tatachar Venugopal of India in the quarter-final, and lost 6-1 6-3.
In the doubles competitions, medals were awarded only to pairs from the same country. This meant the Wales girls pair of Joely Lomas and Rebekah O'Loughlin (Cardiff Metropolitan University XL Academy) won gold for finishing third in the tournament, as the top two pairs were from different countries.
In the boys’ doubles, Matthew Story and Ricky Hernandez-Tong (Cardiff Metropolitan University XL Academy) won silver medals, after finishing fourth.
In the mixed doubles, Rebekah O'Loughlin and Ricky Hernandez-Tong lost in the quarterfinals against number three seeds Lesedi Jacobs of Namibia and Kukutla Motlojoa of Lesotho, 6-0 2-6 [10-8].
“We knew there was potential for Wales to get into the medals at these Games, but to come back with three is outstanding,” said Tennis Wales chief executive, Peter Drew.
“Led by captain Ellinore Lightbody, our Tennis Wales performance manager, the players really shone in the international arena. The team was a credit to Wales.”
