Monday, September 24, 2018

Hundreds of primary school children are set to take part in the Newport Schools Tennis Roadshow this week, as part of a campaign to get more kids playing tennis in the city.

The Schools Tennis Roadshow is being funded by the Tennis Foundation, Tennis Wales and Newport Live. The action packed week long Roadshow will visit 10 schools across the city between Monday 24th September and Friday 28th September, culminating in a huge festival of tennis at the weekend .

Children will have an interactive and action packed experience, with inflatable tennis equipment, rackets, mini tennis balls and some of the most engaging coaches in the sport. All those taking part will receive some superb opportunities to keep playing the game with subsidised and discounted tennis at the Newport Tennis Centre, which boasts indoor & outdoor tennis courts.

Phil Leighton, Crosssports Team said “I am delighted to be bringing the Schools Tennis Roadshow back to Wales after a busy year so far which included delivering the ‘Kids Zone’ activities at the Wimbledon Championships fortnight”   We are excited to take tennis to children aged 5 - 8 across Newport in number of schools this week. Tennis is for everyone and activities will be inclusive to all abilities and involve skills such as hand-eye coordination, balance and agility. On the 29th & 30th September we will be offering something for the whole of Newport’s community.  Inflatables and fun-filled sessions at the city’s Tennis Centre based within the impressive Newport LIVE International Sports Village. All equipment is provided and there’s no need to book, just turn up at one of the chosen sessions.

Luke Difranco, Newport Live Tennis Centre Development Officer, said Newport LIVE are looking forward to the Schools Tennis Roadshow giving the opportunity for many children across the city to play Tennis. Working closely with Tennis Wales and the Tennis Foundation has allowed us to be able to deliver this great opportunity across Newport and truly inspire the next generation of Tennis Players in Newport with a sport for life.

Newport Live Tennis Centre is one of only six community indoor tennis centres in Wales. Tennis Wales, the National Governing Body for tennis in Wales have been working with the team to provide exciting new opportunities for adults & juniors of all ages and make the sport accessible to everyone who wants to take part.
