BBC SPORT WALES STORY - "James Story - The new Story of Welsh tennis"

Correct as of Monday 11th March 2019

Welsh tennis experienced another impressive month in February with a number of domestic and international titles…

Evan Hoyt, who was crowned player of the year at the Tennis Wales awards earlier this year, has moved his singles ATP world ranking up to 493 and his ITF World Tennis Tour ranking up to 55 after some strong recent performances in Tunisia and GB.  Ev has reached one final and two semi-finals in singles and has won three doubles titles in four weeks!

James Story moved into the top 100 of the ITF junior world rankings for the first time this month.  Trips to some high grade events in USA, Australia and Russia have all contributed to his rise.  Most recently, James reached the semi-final of the grade 3 event and the Last 16 of the grade 1 event in Russia and finished as winner and runner-up in doubles respectively.

Mimi Xu represented Great Britain at the U12 European Winter Cup Finals with the team finishing in third position overall.  Mimi remained undefeated in her singles matches!

Joe White reached the SF of the grade 3 ITF event in Cyprus following on from a doubles title he won in Norway the previous week.

There was no shortage of international doubles titles over the last month:

Evan Hoyt – Winner of Men’s ITFs in Tunisia, Barnstaple, Glasgow

Morgan Cross – Winner of junior ITF in Norway

James Story – Winner of junior ITF in Russia

Joe White – Winner of junior ITF in Norway

Mimi Xu – Winner of U12 Tennis Europe event in France

Ollie Page and Archie Gray have been performing very well at the U10 Winter National Tour events.  At the 3rd WNT event of the season in Bolton, Ollie and Archie both reached the final.  This was the first time in many years there had been an all welsh final at a national level event.  As a result of their performances over the season both of the boys qualified for the end of circuit WNT Finals event at NTC with Ollie narrowly losing out in the main draw final and Archie winning the consolation event.

The final round of events in the U12 and U16 WNT circuits took place in February with 7 Welsh juniors taking part.  Hugo Cochlin and Aditi Chezhian both won through their qualifying groups in the U16 event and Conor Flynn reached the semi-final of the U12 boys event.  Tennis Wales provided on site coach support to the Welsh players at both events.
