The Caveney Road Surfacing Tennis League, covering the South Warwickshire and District Area, awarded two important trophies recently. The first award was the “King Cup” a trophy donated by the League President Tony King from Alcester. This trophy was in recognition of the best club in 2009 and was awarded to Stratford-on-Avon Tennis Club.
This “Club of the Year” trophy was not awarded because of their seventh consecutive League Championship, admirable though that is. Nor for winning the Inter-League Charity Cup for the summer League over the Winter League’s champions Leamington Spa. They have been chosen firstly because Stratford entered two junior teams into the League’s Junior Cup competition and their coaches and organisers Graeme Adams and Ralf Neilson performed their roles admirably. Also, despite running three men’s teams in the summer league, the club has run efficiently and received no fines, which is a credit to their team captains Tim Page, Nick Harper and Steve Bromley. Praise must also go to their senior member Alan Colbourne, who throughout recent years has done an excellent job organising the barbecue at the Annual Pairs Tournament and Presentations. Stratford further qualified because of their thriving membership, particularly at junior level, and their general contribution to tennis. Apart from their A Team finishing as League champions, the B Team finished sixth in the Premier Division and the C Team finished fifth in Division Two. This is the sixth year this award has been made with last year’s winners Claverdon Tennis Club handing over the trophy.
The second trophy was the “Millennium Scroll” for the best individual Administrator of 2009 in the League. This trophy was awarded by the League Secretary Corin Bishop whose personal choice was Mike Baker from Inkberrow Tennis Club. He was the contact and captain for Inkberrow C but was also instrumental in volunteering his time to take on the new role of Fixture Secretary for 2009 which he completed very successfully. Mike has been a long time servant and contact for Inkberrow with the league and has performed a sterling job with an unblemished record. The League Secretary believes he is a deserving winner of the 2009 “Millennium Scroll”.
