AEGON British Junior National Championships 2009

Solihull’s Alana Griffin lost 6-1 6-2 to Dominique Covington in the second round of the AEGON British Junior National Championships in Bournemouth.

The 12-year-old had beaten the sixth seed Harriet Dart in the previous round, but was unable to replicate similar form against an older opponent.

“It was a pretty rubbish match.  I tried everything possible today but she was a lot bigger and stronger than I was, so she was even able to return shots that were previously winners for me,” said Griffin.

“I’ve learnt a lot from playing in the nationals this week and it’s given me a lot to go away and think about and improve upon.

“Like I know that for opponents like Dominique I need to keep her in rallies longer as she didn’t have much stamina.”

Griffin will now return to her club and get ready for her next competition; the Road to Wimbledon.

“I’ve definitely learnt a lot this week in Bournemouth but I will have to change my game slightly for my next competition as it will be on grass so I will have to get a lot lower to the ground and be prepared for slightly faster shots.”

The AEGON British Junior National Championships is the highest domestic accolade available to Britain’s most promising young players and past champions included the current men’s and women’s British number ones, Andy Murray and Anne Keothavong.

"The AEGON Junior nationals are a great way to pit yourself against your peers and battle it out for the title of the best in Britain,” said Keothavong.

“It's also a chance to see some of the most talented young players in the country compete against each other - hopefully we'll see some of them stepping up to the pro game in the future.”

This is the first year that the prestigious competition has been supported by AEGON, a leading life assurance company.  In September 2008, AEGON was announced as the first Lead Partner of British Tennis.  AEGON backs the game at all levels, from grassroots programmes through to international events.
