Success for Beechwood Men & Edgbaston Priory Ladies At Warwickshire Inter District Play-Offs 2009

Monday, October 05, 2009

The Warwickshire Inter District Play-Offs 2009 were held at Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre on September 25th featuring the winners from the Birmingham Area League and Coventry & District League.  The Men's title was due to be contested between Four Oaks Tennis Club and Beechwood LTC, with the 2009 women’s title being contested between Edgbaston Priory and Warwick Boat Club.

For both the squads and match reports please read on:

Men:

Beechwood:  Maniel Baines & Richard Allen (1st Pair), Ian Hughes & Jon Ison (2nd Pair)

Four Oaks:  Arnaud Benidor & Dan Cotter (1st Pair), Nigel Lloyd & Mark Carpenter (2nd Pair)

The men’s event was an extremely close tie with the eventual winner being decided by one single set.  The first match between Four Oaks and Beechwood’s first pairs was the match of the day going all the way to a tie break with Four Oaks taking the early rubber winning the tie break 10/8.  However Beechwood soon hit back with their first pair winning in straight sets against Four Oaks’s second pair 6/0, 6/1.

It was now the turn of Four Oaks first pair to face Beechwood’s second pair.  Four Oaks first pair performed extremely well and took the match in straight sets 6/1, 6/2 however the result was reversed by Beechwood’s second pair when they played against Four Oaks second pair with Beechwood coming through in straight sets 6/4, 7/5.

After a great set of matches it was Beechwood LTC who were finally crowned Warwickshire Inter District Play-Offs Champions 2009.  Massive congratulations should go out to both Beechwood and the valiant runners up Four Oaks for putting on such a sterling performance.

Women:

Edgbaston Priory:  Anjoli Foster & Celia Frazer (1st Pair), Hannah Porter & Katie Cheswick (2nd Pair)

Warwick Boat Club:  Kate Young & Susie Row (1st Pair), Helen Lovekin & Anna Potts (2nd Pair)

With the Warwickshire Inter District Play-Offs 2009 men’s champion decided it was time to focus on the Women’s event.  Unfortunately the women’s event wasn’t as closely contested as the men’s however there was still some great tennis on display.  Edgbaston Priory Women’s first pair managed to pick up straight sets victories against both Warwick Boat Club’s first and second pairs winning 6/0, 6/3 and 6/1, 6/1 respectively.  However when Warwick Boat Clubs First pair played against Edgbaston Priory’s second pair the match was much closer going all the way to a tie break.  Eventually Edgbaston Priory came through winning 0/6, 6/2, 10/6 to taken an unassailable 3-0 rubbers lead.  With the final outcome already decided Edgbaston Priory’s second pair took on Warwick Boat Clubs second pair with Warwick Boat Club attempting to avoid a whitewash defeat.  Unfortunately for Warwick Boat Club this was not to be and after a gallant display finally succumbed to a 6/4, 6/2 loss leaving Edgbaston Priory to lift the trophy after a 4-0 rubbers victory.
