As Wimbledon approaches the Nike Junior Tour 2009 has commenced at various regional venues across the UK. Penns Lane Tennis Club hosted the first of 3 events across Warwickshire and it proved a huge success with entries from as far as Yorkshire, Lancashire, Middlesex, Essex and Gloucester.
In this leg of the tour No 2 seed Charlie Song (Warks), won the U14 boys defeating unseeded George Davies (Mid) in a thrilling match lasting 2.5 hours, whilst No 1 seed James Ison (Leics) defeated unseeded Miles Johnson-Manley (Gloucs) for the U12 boys title.
The U12 boys event saw two Penns United players, Oliver Nolan and Harry Packer defeating seeded players. Oliver reached the quarter finals and Harry the semis. A superb personal achievement for both players with such a strong draw. The girls events saw Beam Phromsorn (Warks) win both the U14 and U12 girls titles. A close fought battle with Rhianna Nathwani (Leics) made for an entertaining final in the U14 girls. Sadly Annabel Rowlands(Che) was forced to retire injured in the U12 final. The U10 green ball event was won by Alex Hughes and runner up was Rohan Mehta, both from Warks.
The next Nike Junior Tour 09 event is the Penns Lane Junior Open, 20th-24th July 2009, followed by Tipton Summer Tournament and Leamington Spa.
